What Is Learning How Do You Know You’re Learning

posted on March 10, 2016 Have you ever had students claim they aren’t learning anything in your class? When  it’s the student who tries to nap most days, you understand where that comment is coming from. But what if it’s a  motivated student, one who you feel you’ve reached all year? Your heart sinks, and if you’re still a relatively new teacher, you start to second-guess yourself. This is particularly true in October and November. I have had this happen before, including this year. As I was pondering how it is that students could think they’re not learning (while at the same time complaining about the amount of reading and writing we do), it occurred to me that maybe my idea of learning and the student’s idea is different. So, I decided to find out what students thought learning is and how they know that they are learning. With but a handful of exceptions, my students agreed that learning is (paraphrased  to capture the spirit of what the vast majority of my students said): when someone who has more skill than you do tells you everything you need to know doing things you’ve never done before working on new things knowing new things you didn’t know before a teacher stands in front of the room and puts the stuff in the book into words I understand getting the knowledge you need to know or that you need to do something trying  to cram a bunch of stuff in your head and hope you can remember it the process of finding out and retaining new information gathering new information from a teacher or other people writing notes and listening to the teacher sitting and listening to people talk about the lesson and you do the work assigned when the work is not confusing How do students say they know they’re learning? when I know what to do when I know things now that I didn’t before when I can remember what I heard  the day before when I see things that I didn’t see before when I don’t fail the class or make low grades when I can answer questions on the test when I like listening to the teacher and take lots of notes when my brain feels full when I pass or fail the End of Instruction exam when I don’t have to think a lot about something when I can do a task all by myself when I struggle to figure out what something means. I think all of my students made valid points — there is a element of learning in, and a time and place for, everything they said.   Some students even exhibited some deeper insight. One student said: Learning is figuring out how to solve a problem, and then applying that to other situations. You know that you’re learning when you can do something that used to be difficult, and now it is easy. Another student added: Learning to me is a skill that you have perfected or the knowledge you’ve obtained. You know you are learning when you are confident in yourself about a certain subject or upcoming test. When I think most of  my students  don’t understand though is that there is much more to learning than just being introduced to new information and then remembering and/or spitting it back out onto a test. So last week, I reviewed Bloom’s Taxonomy with my students.    Click for details. Click for details. You can find these graphics, and others like them, at Teach Thought. I explained that learning to communicate verbally and in writing is a process, and that learning new information is just a part of that process. Since then, when we are working on our writing prompts, I point out when we’re applying what we’ve learned (even from years past), analyzing information, evaluating a situation, or creating something new. If you have students who feel like they aren’t learning, or you just want to deepen your students’ understanding of the learning process, share Bloom’s Taxonomy with them.    Michelle WatersI am a secondary English Language Arts teacher, a University of Oklahoma student working on my Master’s of Education in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum with an concentration in English Education, and a NBPTS candidate. I am constantly seeking ways to amplify my students’ voices and choices.

The And The Lighthouse By Woolf - 969 Words

Virginia Woolf was among the founders of the Modernist literary movement and an influential woman in literature of the twentieth century. Modernism introduced a new type of narration to the novel, changing the entire nature of novel writing. Woolf utilized the use of narration titled, stream-of-consciousness. Instead of looking out into the world, the novel’s viewpoint followed the practicalities of the human mind. This narrative perspective was an experimental, monologue technique for the time and provided multiple, shifting viewpoints through the minds of each character. In To the Lighthouse, Woolf uses this experimental narrative technique to create a subjective reality, representative of Modernism literature, and examines gender roles, broaches the discussion of philosophy, and the discusses aftermath of death and the war. To the Lighthouse was a groundbreaking literary piece and illuminates the beginning of feminist literature. Both films rely on â€Å"jump scares† to entice its audience, but its more about the hunt than anything else. Toying with your prey with little execution seems to be the running theme of The Purge. The Purge: Anarchy had some unique twists, but it fails to go as far as youd hope. Both movies fail to give the sensation that an impending and violent death is just around the corner. The violence seems toned down in the sequel, especially when the only really gruesome death in the film is completely, noticeably, and poorly computer generated. Responsibility of Friar Lawrence in Shakespeares Romeo...

â€Å"From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star- crossed lovers take their life, Whose misadventured piteous overthrows, Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.† There are many reasons to the tragedy of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The tragedy, of Romeo and Juliet, involves a pair of ill- fated lovers who by their deaths will end the long and bitter feud that has been raging between their families for centuries. There are many incidents that occurred and many people could be blamed for the deaths of the two lovers. However, I believe that Friar Laurence is the one character most at fault for the tragedy that occurred. One of the mistakes that Friar Laurence made was sending Friar John with the†¦show more content†¦He is the one that informed Romeo of Juliets â€Å"death† in the first place and was able to get into the city of Mantua despite the Black Plague. (Act 4- Scene 1, Pg. 99)† The plan that Friar Laurence was speaking of was Juliet taking a potion that made her seem as though she was dead for forty- two hours. The family, believing her to bed dead, would have her taken to the Capulet burial vault. When she would awaken, Romeo would have already been informed of the plan and be there to take there to Mantua. His convincing Juliet to take the potion is another reason to blame for the death is because he never considered what would happen if the potion did not allow Juliet to return from her â€Å"pleasant sleep†. Romeo would have thought that Friar Laurence had killed her by givin g her poison and then he would be executed for killing Friar Laurence in his rage of anger. For example, the doctor may say that a patient needs bloods and an MRI scan. That can sound very frightening to someone who has be en rushed in to hospital. It is better if the doctor explains that they need to take some blood to do some simple tests and then explains what a MRI scan is. Understanding the facts can make something seem less scary. Slag is when a service user uses language that not everyone uses, such as saying they have a problem with their waterworks. This can mean their plumbing system but also means a problem going to the toilet. Sometimes it may be appropriate to use slang with their friends but in normal working with colleagues or service users they should avoid using any language that can be misunderstood or misinterpreted or that might cause offence. Dialect is when people use different words for everyday objects or feelings depending on the area of a country they come from. In some areas of England people say â€Å"Innit† instead of â€Å"Isn’t it† or â€Å"summit† instead of â€Å"something†. It may cause confusion if someone says â€Å"ave got a pain in my head† instead of, â€Å"I’ve got a headache†. Acronyms are when words are shorted to initials. There are lots of acronyms in health and social care and they can very confusing.
